I study English everyday.
How much do YOU study Korean?
This makes me feel guilty…. I should study Korean since I wanna move/live there in the future and actually work as a GD/Photographer there …. I will study harder!
Oof. Right in the guilty. >.<;;
Edit: Trying to get better at studying, though. Meh.
lol @ some of these white foreigners losing their minds in the notes. Never a dull moment.
Personally, I’ve seen two sides of the same coin:
1. Those who go to another country (especially a PoC-dominant one), think they don’t need to learn a single word of the language, then get real mad and complain about what a shithole it is. Welp, just because they said “you don’t need to know [insert language] to qualify as an ESL teacher” doesn’t mean that life outside of teaching accommodates your monolingualism and privilege-ingrained sense of self.
2. Those who go to another country, learn a bit of the language/culture, and start engaging in fetishism/cultural appropriation/white saviour complexes because THEY ARE EXPERTS NAO
Given the slim-to-nil chances of encountering a teacher who gets it (“it” being general anti-racism and comprehensive knowledge of the fucked up things that have happened in Korea, courtesy of white supremacy, colonialism/imperialism, and western parasitism), this person has every right to be snarky about power imbalances. Point 2 is everything wrong with Eat Your Kimchi, if you ever wondered.
